There’s a saying that floats around leadership circles: “Go fast alone, but go far together.” But I’ve been wondering—what if going far also means knowing when to pause?

We live in a world that rewards speed. Hustle harder. Do more. Be available. For women in corporate spaces juggling full plates—tight deadlines, endless meetings, and the invisible weight of running a household—slowing down can feel like breaking the rules. Like there’s no permission slip for rest.

And yet, here’s something we don’t hear nearly enough: slowing down isn’t stepping back. It’s stepping forward—with intention.

Why slowing down feels so hard

Let’s be honest—it feels uncomfortable.

The pace you keep—at work and at home—has trained you to believe that doing is everything. Productivity feels like proof that you’re managing it all. Taking your foot off the gas? That feels risky—like the whole system might fall apart if you’re not holding it together.

And still—how often do you find yourself racing through the day, checking boxes, handling fires…only to collapse at night feeling like nothing really got done? Like the meaningful conversations, the self-care, or even just the breathing room got lost in the shuffle.

We’ve all been there. I know I have.

Slowing down asks us to challenge the belief that our worth comes from how much we get done. It invites us to pause, take stock, and choose the next step—not out of urgency, but out of clarity.

When we do hit pause—whether it’s a moment to gather your thoughts before a tough meeting, a breath between back-to-back calls, or a longer stretch of time to reflect—something shifts.

That pause creates space.

Space to breathe. Space to ask yourself: What matters most right now? Space to notice how you’re really doing underneath the checklists and the calendar invites.

What slowing down actually looks like?

Slowing down doesn’t mean booking a two-week retreat. Sometimes, it’s as simple as:

  • Taking a breath before replying to that email—giving yourself a beat to respond thoughtfully instead of reacting.

  • Leaving five minutes between meetings—not to check your phone, but to stretch, sip water, or just sit still.

  • Asking yourself: “Does this really need to happen right now?” That question alone can shift what feels urgent.

  • Jotting down a few lines at the end of the day—noting what felt good, what drained you, or where you could use some support.

These small acts? They ripple out. They help you make clearer decisions, protect your energy, and reconnect with your bigger picture.

You’re not meant to go nonstop

 Somewhere along the way, many of us picked up this myth that success comes from endurance—just keep going, right?

But we’re not machines. We’re human. We’re meant to work in cycles of focus and rest. Even the most elite athletes know this—they build recovery into their training because strength doesn’t grow in the push; it grows in the pause.

You deserve that same respect for your rhythms.
